Cervical screening changes in Australia

On 1st December 2017, the 2 yearly pap smear was replaced by 5 yearly cervical screening. This change was a result of greater understanding of cervical cancer and better technology that will reduce cervical cancer rates even further.

For further information, please see the 'Documents for Download' section on this page..

The Cytology Pap Smear Audit will close in accordance with the renewal of the National Cervical Screening Program to be implemented 1st December 2017. For further information contact the Education Team.

Update: Self-collection testing

TML Pathology will now accept self-collected samples that meet the strict Medicare criteria. Any samples that do not meet the criteria will not be accepted. There is no privately billed service for these samples.
Eligible samples will be sent to Victorian Cytology Service to perform testing.
Samples will need to be taken using the Copan Floq swab (red top) (see Self-Collect – HPV Specimen Collection below) and the request form must clearly indicate Self-collect, Cervical screening test.

Please see MBS item 73071 or the Self-Collect – HPV Specimen Collection brochure below for details on eligibility criteria and collection instructions.
