Oesophageal cancer risk test

The Oesophageal Health Test is a blood test designed to rule out oesophageal cancer.

What is this test?

Oesophageal adenocarcinoma is the most common type of oesophageal cancer and is associated with long-term gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), also known as chronic heartburn or acid reflux.

This blood test measures specific protein biomarkers and combines these results with clinical information to provide an individualised assessment of oesophageal cancer risk.

Who should consider this test?

This test may be suitable for adults who:

  • Have experienced chronic heartburn or acid reflux for five years or longer
  • Are over 50 years of age
  • Are overweight (BMI >25 kg/m²)
  • Have at least two recognised risk factors for oesophageal adenocarcinoma

Your doctor can advise whether this test is appropriate for you.

Why is this test important?

Many people with oesophageal cancer are not diagnosed until the disease has progressed to later stages. Current assessment methods typically involve endoscopy, which can be invasive and costly.

This blood test provides a simple, non-invasive approach to assessing oesophageal cancer risk and may provide additional information to support discussions with your healthcare provider.

How does the test work?

The test analyses four protein biomarkers associated with oesophageal adenocarcinoma and combines these results with information including age, sex, height and weight to generate a personalised risk score.

A simple blood test is required. You can have the test at any TML Pathology collection centre. Your sample is analysed in an accredited Australian laboratory.

Results are provided to your referring healthcare practitioner.
